2018 Projected Titan Baseball Roster – Weekend Starters

2017 Team poses with 1544 sign

The 2017 Cal State Fullerton Titan Baseball season ended in Omaha with the Titans making their 18th trip to the College World Series. Although the trip to Omaha resulted in the dreaded “2 & a Q”, the 2017 team will give way to a 2018 team that will need to fill some holes before booking a return trip to Omaha.

Of the starting rotation and bullpen that played at the end of the season in the 2017 Palo Alto Regional, 2017 Long Beach Super Regional and the 2017 College World Series in Omaha, only three will definitely not return to the 2018 Titan Baseball squad. But of those three pitchers not returning, 2/3rds of the weekend rotation was lost to the Major League Baseball draft.

Why is the College World Series always played in Omaha?

Unlike other neutral sites that host championship games like the Super Bowl, the NCAA Final Four or the College Football Playoffs, the NCAA College World Series has been played in Omaha, Nebraska since 1950.

But why? Why Omaha? Why not have the College World Series (CWS) played in other cities and other venues? The answer is not as simple and cut and dried as you may think.

Long Beach protective of Blair Field; Severely limits tickets to Fullerton fans

It appears that the Long Beach State inferiority complex is worse than perceived. Why else would Long Beach State allocate such a limited number of tickets out of 3,283 seats at Blair Field to Cal State Fullerton? Sounds like they are trying to gain a home field advantage in a Super Regional that is designated by the NCAA as a neutral field.

Fullerton Regional 2010

Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton will yet again be hosting another NCAA baseball regional in 2010. Goodwin Field is becoming a regular stop for those teams with aspirations of heading to Omaha for the College World Series. Again, the Cal State Fullerton baseball team has earned their nickname “Cal State Omaha” this year because those teams wanting to go to Omaha, have to go through Fullerton.

In 2010, Cal State Fullerton was tabbed the No. 1 regional seed by the NCAA baseball selection committee and will be the host of the regional. Joining the Titans in the 2010 Fullerton Regional will be the Stanford Cardinal (No. 2 seed), New Mexico Lobos (No. 3 seed) and the Minnesota Golden Gophers (No. 4 seed). Opening the regional will be Stanford taking on New Mexico in the first game scheduled for 4 pm local time, Friday, June 4, 2010. Cal State Fullerton will play Minnesota in the No. 2 game scheduled for 8 pm local time. (That first pitch could be moved based on the length of the preceding Stanford/New Mexico game and for television reasons.) ESPNU will be televising the Fullerton Regional games from Goodwin Field. The remaining weekend schedule will be determined by game results.
